Niagara Falls

Straddling the border between the United States and Canada, Niagara Falls is one of the most famous natural wonders in North America, formed as glaciers receded at the end of the last Ice Age nearly 12,000 years ago. The falls are made up of three separate cascades — the Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls — together sending an astonishing 85,000 cubic feet of water thundering over the Niagara Escarpment every second.

The most dramatic of the three, Horseshoe Falls, curves gracefully along the Canadian side and accounts for the vast majority of the water flow, its mist rising so high it can be seen from kilometers away. Boat tours, most famously the Maid of the Mist and Hornblower cruises, take visitors directly into the base of the falls, offering a soaking, unforgettable close encounter with its raw power.

On the Canadian side, the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, offers sweeping panoramic views of all three cascades side by side, along with observation towers, illuminated night displays, and seasonal fireworks over the gorge. The American side, in New York State, provides closer access to the American and Bridal Veil Falls via Niagara Falls State Park, the oldest state park in the United States.

Beyond the falls themselves, the surrounding Niagara Gorge offers hiking trails along dramatic cliffside paths, while nearby Niagara-on-the-Lake and the Niagara wine region add a charming detour for those looking to extend their visit beyond the roar of the water.
